General Atomics has successfully conducted a groundbreaking demonstration of its MQ-20 Avenger unmanned aerial system, marking a significant milestone in military drone technology. This trial involved the drone executing a missile strike on live targets, underscoring its capabilities in modern warfare.

The MQ-20 was equipped with a government-provided autonomy software that enabled it to perform various functions critical for patrol operations. These included autonomous decision-making, dynamic mid-air maneuvering in coordination with manned aircraft, and effective integration with command and control systems. During the test, the drone simulated an offensive operation aimed at neutralizing two aircraft, achieving a commendable success with its airborne strike.

A notable feature of this demonstration was the mid-flight transition of the MQ-20 from the government’s autonomy suite to the Hivemind machine learning software provided by Shield AI. This switch allowed the drone to perform identical mission sets while demonstrating how different vendor technologies can be seamlessly integrated. This adaptability was emphasized by Michael Atwood, vice president of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. The MQ-20 Avenger is an advanced aerial system measuring 44 feet in length and boasting a wingspan of 66 feet, with a fuel capacity of 7,900 pounds. Its design incorporates a high-resolution radar and a comprehensive sensor suite, powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545B turbofan that delivers around 4,000 horsepower. The drone is equipped with an internal compartment capable of carrying 3,500 pounds of weapons and features six external hardpoints, allowing for a versatile payload that includes both guided and unguided munitions as well as armor-penetrating missiles tailored to specific operational needs.

In terms of performance, the MQ-20 can reach speeds of up to 400 knots (about 460 miles per hour), ascend to altitudes of 50,000 feet, and cover a range of 1,100 miles. Its impressive endurance exceeds 15 hours, making it a formidable asset for various military operations.
