Army Chief Conducts Security Review Ahead of Shri Amarnath Yatra 2025

In a significant move to bolster security measures ahead of the upcoming Shri Amarnath Yatra 2025, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi conducted a comprehensive security review in Kashmir. The annual pilgrimage, set to take place from July 3 to August 9, is anticipated to attract over 600,000 devotees, underscoring the region’s critical security landscape.

During his visit, General Dwivedi meticulously evaluated the readiness of the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, receiving thorough briefings on prevailing threat assessments and strategic deployments in the area. A pivotal aspect of the review included demonstrations showcasing the advanced surveillance infrastructure and rapid response capabilities that have been integrated into the Army’s operations.

These enhancements are part of a broader modernization strategy initiated by the Indian Army post-2022, which aims to incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, drone surveillance, and digital command systems. This modernization is predicted to enhance operational efficiency in conflict zones by approximately 30%.

Commending the Chinar Corps for their unwavering vigilance and successful counter-terrorism operations, General Dwivedi emphasized the importance of fostering community engagement and development initiatives as essential factors for maintaining long-term peace in the region. This represents a departure from previous years, where security assessments were typically conducted at the corps command level. General Dwivedi’s direct engagement reflects heightened security concerns, especially given that there has been a reported 15% increase in terrorist incidents across Jammu and Kashmir in 2024, as per data from the South Asia Terrorism Portal.

The Shri Amarnath Yatra, organized under the auspices of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, poses unique security challenges due to ongoing threats in the region. In response, the Indian Army has committed to working closely with paramilitary forces and local administration to ensure a safe and secure environment for pilgrims as they embark on this revered pilgrimage, amidst the evolving security landscape.
