Joint Anti-Terror Operation Launched in Udhampur Ahead of Amarnath Yatra

A significant joint anti-terror operation, designated ‘Operation Bihali’, is currently underway in the Bihali area of Basantgarh, located within the Udhampur district. Initiated earlier today by the Indian Army in collaboration with the Jammu & Kashmir Police, the operation follows the receipt of specific intelligence pointing towards the presence of terrorists in the region.

Security forces have already established contact with the suspected militants, leading to an ongoing exchange of gunfire. To contain the situation, the area has been cordoned off, and additional reinforcements have been deployed, with the aim of neutralizing the militants.

The timing of this operation is particularly crucial, occurring just days before the commencement of the Amarnath Yatra on July 1, an annual pilgrimage expected to attract hundreds of thousands of devotees. In anticipation of this influx, authorities have intensified security measures throughout Jammu and Kashmir. These measures include the implementation of multi-layered security grids and advanced surveillance systems.

Among the security arrangements this year are the deployment of drones, artificial intelligence-enabled facial recognition technology, and ground-level security personnel. This preemptive operation reflects broader strategic efforts to prevent any potential disruptions during the pilgrimage, which has historically been a target for terror groups.

Udhampur’s proximity to the Line of Control and its troubled history with terrorist activities render the area strategically sensitive. A tragic incident in 2017 highlighted this reality when an attack by operatives of Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed the lives of 11 Amarnath pilgrims, pointing to the critical importance of timely intelligence and prompt action in the region.

According to data from the South Asia Terrorism Portal, over 180 terror groups have been active in Jammu and Kashmir over the past two decades. In 2022, more than 200 civilian deaths associated with terrorism were reported, reinforcing the need for operations like Bihali to effectively counter infiltration and protect civilian lives.

Authorities are diligently monitoring the developments, and further updates are anticipated as the joint security forces continue their operations in the Basantgarh sector.
