The White House has reiterated its commitment to a trade agreement between the United States and India, indicating that the deal is on the verge of completion. During a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized India’s importance as a “very strategic ally.” She confirmed that US President Donald Trump and his trade team are in the final stages of the negotiations. Responding to inquiries from reporters, Leavitt stated, “Yes, the President said that last week, and it remains true. I just spoke to our Secretary of Commerce about it. He was in the Oval Office with the President. They are finalising these agreements, and you’ll hear from the President and his trade team very soon when it comes to India.”
Leavitt also responded to questions from Indian news agency ANI, addressing concerns over China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific and its potential impact on US-India relations. She reaffirmed that India plays a critical role in the Asia Pacific, highlighting the strong rapport between President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Leavitt expressed confidence that this relationship would continue to flourish.
This potential trade pact aligns with increasing American efforts to bolster partnerships throughout the Indo-Pacific as a means to counterbalance China’s expanding economic and military influence.
