In a recent exclusive interview with Tarmak Media House, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of Defence Research & Development and Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), provided significant updates regarding the Tejas Mk2 fighter aircraft. He confirmed that the first flight of the Tejas Mk2, also referred to as Tejas MkII or LCA Mk2, is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. This announcement aligns with remarks made by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman and Managing Director Dr. D.K. Sunil, who revealed that the aircraft’s rollout is set for March 2026.
The Tejas Mk2 signifies considerable advancements compared to its predecessors, the Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A variants. Key features include the powerful General Electric F414 engine, enhanced avionics, an indigenous Uttam AESA radar, and sophisticated electronic warfare systems. These upgrades aim to improve operational capabilities and ensure greater survivability in complex combat scenarios.
Designed as a medium-weight multi-role fighter, the Tejas Mk2 seeks to fill the operational gap between light fighters and heavier classes. The upcoming rollout in March 2026 will indicate the successful completion of assembly and ground testing, paving the way for the aircraft’s maiden flight shortly afterward.
Dr. Kamat emphasized the rigorous testing and validation processes the aircraft is undergoing to meet demanding performance and safety standards. Upon entering service, the Tejas Mk2 is anticipated to be integral to the Indian Air Force’s modernization strategy, progressively replacing outdated platforms such as the MiG-21.
With plans for an order of 240 aircraft, the Tejas Mk2 program is poised to become a cornerstone of India’s defense landscape. It not only aims to enhance the combat effectiveness of the Indian Air Force but also aligns with the nation’s desire for technological self-reliance and the promotion of industrial growth through indigenous development efforts.
