In a notable affirmation of the strong military ties between India and Bhutan, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi visited the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) stationed in Bhutan. This visit underscored the enduring defense partnership that has existed since 1962, built on mutual trust and a commitment to regional security.
During his visit to the IMTRAT base, General Dwivedi was briefed on the operations of the training mission, which plays a crucial role in equipping Bhutanese military personnel with essential skills. Over the years, IMTRAT has trained over 10,000 Bhutanese soldiers, making it a cornerstone of the bilateral defense relationship. General Dwivedi commended the collaborative efforts between Indian and Bhutanese forces, especially in areas like leadership development and modern warfare interoperability.
A ceremonial highlight of the visit was the presentation of awards to Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) officers, illustrating the deep-seated camaraderie between the two military forces. General Dwivedi also engaged in community outreach activities, warmly interacting with Bhutanese citizens, including children, and distributing gifts as a gesture of goodwill.
The visit also served as a reminder of India’s vital support to Bhutan’s defense capabilities. A significant instance of this collaboration occurred during Operation All Clear in 2003, when the Indian Air Force provided essential air support to oust insurgents from Bhutanese territory. This cooperative defense framework is increasingly relevant in light of growing Chinese military activities near Bhutan’s northern border, especially following Tibet’s annexation by China in 1959.
