The Indian Army has initiated the third evaluation phase for the Agniveer soldiers recruited in January 2023 under the Agnipath scheme. This assessment is pivotal in determining the candidates eligible for permanent roles within the armed forces, with final selections anticipated by October 2026.
Approximately 3,000 Agniveers, who participated in Operation Sindoor—India’s coordinated response to recent cross-border missile and drone strikes—are currently undergoing this crucial evaluation. The operational performance of these soldiers, especially in air defence roles, will significantly influence the assessment outcomes.
This third evaluation is part of a comprehensive four-stage process mandated by the Agnipath scheme. Agniveers are evaluated at the 31-week, 18-month, 30-month, and 42-month marks of their service. The current stage focuses on physical fitness, drill performance, and weapons handling skills. To ensure transparency and impartiality, assessments are conducted by external teams rather than members of the Agniveers’ own units.
Officials within the Army have underscored the fairness of the evaluation system, ensuring that each Agniveer receives a mark sheet detailing their performance. Moreover, candidates are allowed multiple attempts—three in the initial phase and two in subsequent evaluations. Additional provisions are available for those posted in more remote or challenging environments, such as Siachen and Ladakh, where they can temporarily join nearby Corps Battle Schools or rear units for their assessments.
During Operation Sindoor, Agniveers operated various sophisticated air defence systems, including Pechora, Schilka, OSA-AK, Strela, and Tunguska, along with medium-range surface-to-air missile systems. Many took on roles as gunners, communication specialists, fire control operators, and heavy vehicle drivers, playing crucial roles in establishing the Akashteer air defence grid effectively.
In recognition of exceptional service, provisions have been made for acknowledging acts of bravery and sporting achievements. Agniveers awarded gallantry honors such as the Sena Medal, Shaurya Chakra, Kirti Chakra, or Ashoka Chakra will automatically be eligible for permanent recruitment. Additionally, receiving a mention in dispatches can earn candidates an extra 25 bonus marks.
On the sports front, those who represent India internationally are guaranteed permanent induction. Agniveers participating in national and service-level competitions can also receive bonus marks—10 for national participation and 6 for service-level events.
The first batch of Agniveers will complete their four-year term in January 2027. After final medical assessments, 25 percent of this batch will be offered permanent positions based on overall merit. Notifications of selection will be provided within a week post-discharge, with successful candidates required to report to their respective regimental centres within 30 days. Non-compliance will result in disqualification, allowing the next qualified candidate from the merit list to fill the position.
