The Indian Army is poised to enhance its aerial capabilities with the impending induction of three AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, expected to officially join the ranks on July 22. These advanced helicopters are anticipated to arrive in Jodhpur soon, where they will undergo a Joint Receipt Inspection before being assigned for operational use.
This delivery represents the first batch of six Apache helicopters being procured under a substantial $600 million contract signed in 2020, aimed at bolstering the Army’s Aviation Corps. A dedicated Apache squadron has already been established in Jodhpur, with plans for deployment along India’s western front, strategically increasing battlefield dominance in that region.
Manufactured by Boeing, the AH-64E Apache is esteemed as one of the most sophisticated multi-role attack helicopters globally. Renowned for its capability to execute precision strikes in challenging terrains, it is already deployed by several military forces, including those of the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, and Egypt, among others.
In a notable shift in strategy, India previously brought 22 Apaches into service for the Indian Air Force through a contract in 2015. The addition of six helicopters for the Army signifies a commitment to providing ground forces with direct air support, ensuring more integrated and seamless operations during combat scenarios.
These Apache helicopters come equipped with advanced technology, including the Modernised Target Acquisition Designation System, Hellfire missiles, a 30mm chain gun, and Longbow radar, which enables target detection and engagement without requiring a direct line of sight. Their versatility to operate effectively in day, night, and adverse weather conditions makes them indispensable assets for modern military operations.
According to Boeing, the integration of these new Apache helicopters will significantly enhance the Indian Army’s capacity to deliver integrated combat aviation support to ground forces. This development aligns with the Army’s broader modernization initiatives, underscoring India’s ongoing investment in strengthening its frontline operational capabilities.
