In a significant demonstration of its commitment to modern warfare, the Indian Army has intensified its focus on technological transformation and battlefield innovation during a high-level review session led by Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, PVSM, AVSM, the Army Commander of the Western Command. This comprehensive evaluation scrutinized the operational readiness of two elite units: the Black Arrow Brigade and the Fleur De Lis Brigade, both renowned for their strategic capabilities and combat performance.
The session highlighted the Army’s latest technological advancements, including state-of-the-art unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) outfitted with high-resolution optics and advanced electronic warfare systems. The review also showcased sophisticated surveillance equipment and secure communication platforms now integral to Indian military operations, further enhancing their operational efficacy.
Lt Gen Katiyar commended the units for their impressive operational sharpness and their adept incorporation of modern technology, aligning with the Indian Army’s broader modernization goals. This initiative coincides with the declaration of 2024 as the “Year of Technology Absorption” by Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande, underscoring the Army’s commitment to integrating innovation into combat systems and decision-making processes.
A pivotal aspect of the review was the emphasis on bolstering intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, particularly in light of escalating regional security challenges, including tensions along the northern borders. The Army is advancing the deployment of secure communication devices and automated battlefield tools, with plans to distribute 35,000 encrypted handsets across various units by the end of 2025. This initiative aims to enhance situational awareness and improve tactical coordination during operations.
Additionally, the troops presented digitized operational plans, upgrades in artillery units, and improvements in electronic warfare strategies, signifying the Army’s strategic transition toward network-centric warfare. During the event, Lt Gen Katiyar engaged directly with personnel, reiterating the twin imperatives of maintaining combat readiness while ensuring the morale and welfare of the troops are prioritized.
This high-level review builds upon previous evaluations conducted by the Kharga Corps in May 2025, which acknowledged the positive effects of emerging technologies on operational efficiency on the battlefield. As global trends in artificial intelligence and autonomous systems shape defense doctrines worldwide, the Indian Army aims to position itself at the forefront of this strategic evolution.
Concluding the review, the Army reaffirmed its dedication to dynamic preparedness with the motto “Taiyari Abhi Jaari Hai” (Preparation is Still On), reflecting its commitment to remain agile and future-ready amidst an ever-evolving security landscape.
