In a significant development for India’s security landscape, Ms. Sonali Mishra has assumed the role of Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), marking a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to lead this central armed police force in its 143-year existence.
The appointment, which received approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, ensures that Ms. Mishra will serve until her retirement on October 31, 2026. With over three decades of service in various key policing roles, both domestically and internationally, she brings a wealth of experience to her new position.
Before her groundbreaking appointment to the RPF, Ms. Mishra held the position of Additional Director General of Police (Selection/Recruitment) in Madhya Pradesh. Her responsibilities also included serving as ADG at the Police Training & Research Institute and as Director of the Madhya Pradesh Police Academy in Bhopal. Her extensive career includes prominent roles within the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Border Security Force (BSF), along with international experience in peacekeeping operations with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.
Recognized for her exemplary service, Ms. Mishra has received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, underscoring her commitment and contributions to law enforcement in India.
The Railway Protection Force, operating under the Ministry of Railways, plays a crucial role in protecting railway property, ensuring the safety of passengers, and preventing crime across India’s extensive railway network. It boasts a workforce of over 74,000 personnel, deployed across thousands of stations and trains throughout the country.
Under Ms. Mishra’s leadership, there is an expectation of modernization within the Force, focusing on the integration of advanced technologies, enhanced coordination in crime prevention, and robust measures against human trafficking and crimes that affect vulnerable passengers.
Upon taking charge, Ms. Mishra expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and reaffirmed her commitment to the RPF’s motto, “Yasho Labhasva,” which means “Attain Honour.” She highlighted her dedication to the core values of vigilance, courage, and public service as guiding principles in her approach.
The RPF has welcomed its new Director General with optimism, eagerly anticipating a new era characterized by reform, innovation, and inclusive leadership under her direction.
