Future Lieutenant Mukta Singh

In a historic moment for the Indian Army, Battalion Under Officer Mukta Singh is poised to make waves as the first female cadet to be awarded the prestigious Bronze Medal at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Gaya. This significant accolade will be conferred upon her during the upcoming Passing Out Parade scheduled for September 6, 2025.

Mukta’s path to this groundbreaking achievement was marked by resilience and determination. Despite facing significant challenges, including being merit-out on two occasions, she refused to succumb to setbacks. On her third attempt at the Short Service Commission (SSC) Technical Women-32 Course, Mukta achieved All India Rank 1 (AIR-1). Her initial training at OTA Chennai transitioned to OTA Gaya, where she faced the additional hurdle of being the only relegated female cadet due to a severe knee injury.

Demonstrating exceptional perseverance, Mukta rose through the ranks with tenacity, holding leadership positions including Academy Under Officer (AUO), Junior Under Officer (JUO), and finally, Battalion Under Officer (BUO). She excelled both academically and physically, consistently topping various training tests and solidifying her reputation at the academy.

Her persistence has now resulted in a remarkable distinction—she is set to finish third in overall merit among all passing-out cadets, earning the exceptional title of the first woman Bronze Medallist at OTG Gaya. This achievement signifies a moment of pride for both her family and the broader Indian Army, as it underscores the breaking of gender barriers within the institution.

OTA Gaya has undergone significant transformation since its expansion in 2023, becoming a critical hub for technical entry training to address India’s evolving regional security needs. The academy’s selection process is fiercely competitive, with only 1–2% of applicants successfully gaining admission. Mukta’s success serves as a testament to the high standards upheld by the academy and the extraordinary resolve she has displayed.

As the Indian Army continues to create more opportunities for women officers, Mukta Singh’s inspiring saga will undoubtedly motivate many young women across the nation who aspire to don the olive green uniform. Her journey is not merely a personal triumph; it marks a pivotal moment in India’s military history, highlighting the Army’s commitment to inclusivity, resilience, and the cultivation of leadership.
