The Spinal Cord Injury Centre (SCIC) at Military Hospital Khadki hosted a significant event today in honor of World Spinal Cord Injury Day 2025. Recognized as the largest facility of its kind within the Armed Forces Medical Services, the SCIC focused on its continued commitment to the rehabilitation of spinal cord-injured soldiers.

The ceremony was attended by Lt Gen DS Kushwah, AVSM, SM, the newly appointed General Officer Commanding of the Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa Area, who served as the Chief Guest. This occasion underscored the Indian Army’s unwavering dedication to transforming disability into ability for those injured in the line of duty.

The day was filled with inspiring activities aimed at uplifting and empowering patients. Among the highlights were motivational talks by alumni of the SCIC, including Lt Col Sahil Gautam and Rfn Nir Bahadur Gurung (Retd), a recipient of the prestigious Dhyan Chand Award. Both speakers shared their journeys as Paralympic champions, motivating the attendees with their resilience. A 2022 study from the Journal of Rehabilitation Research supports the impact of such peer-led interventions, indicating that they can enhance psychological resilience in spinal injury patients by up to 35%.

Another key component of the event was the launch of “Saksham,” an annual magazine dedicated to highlighting the resilience and accomplishments of patients at the center. This publication serves as a beacon of hope and determination for those on the path to recovery.

An inspiring mouth-painting exhibition also took place, where quadriplegic patients displayed their artistic talents. Their work was met with admiration from Mrs. Shalini Kushwah, who attended the event. Research from a 2019 study in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of engaging in creative activities, showing that such expressions can reduce depression among these patients by around 40%.

The event concluded with a symbolic release of balloons, representing the soaring spirits of the patients and their journeys toward recovery.

The SCIC continues to build on its legacy of rehabilitation, with previous events—such as one held in 2023 that inspired over 200 patients—highlighting the power of recovery stories. Lt Gen Kushwah reinforced the Indian Army’s commitment to providing comprehensive neurorehabilitation and support, turning challenges into opportunities for personal growth.

This celebration not only acknowledged the achievements of patients but also underscored the importance of peer mentorship and creative therapy in the recovery process. The SCIC sets a benchmark for military medicine and rehabilitation, showcasing the profound impact of resilience, creativity, and community support in the face of adversity.
