Hanwha Defence Australia Selects Electro Optic Systems for LAND 400 Phase 3 Program

Hanwha Defence Australia has formed a significant partnership with Electro Optic Systems (EOS) to enhance the capabilities of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) through a newly awarded contract tied to the LAND 400 Phase 3 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) program. The contract, valued at 108 million Australian dollars (approximately 71 million USD), spans multiple years and includes not only the provision of advanced Remote Weapon Systems but also spare parts, training, and comprehensive documentation.

Under the terms of the agreement, EOS is set to deliver its upgraded R400 Remote Weapon Systems, specifically tailored to fulfill the ADF’s operational requirements. These systems will be fully integrated with the AS21 Redback IFV, a platform recently procured by Australia. Notably, the production of the R400 will take place at EOS’ facility in Canberra, backed by a robust national supply chain involving over 100 Australian enterprises.

Andreas Schwer, CEO of EOS, emphasized the significance of the contract for Australian industry, expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration with Hanwha Defence Australia on a project deemed critical for the Army. Schwer highlighted that the endeavor not only supports skilled employment but also reinforces Australia’s sovereign defence manufacturing capabilities while showcasing local suppliers on a project of strategic relevance.

The R400 Remote Weapon System is recognized for its precision and reliability, enhancing light vehicles with the same firepower typically associated with heavier platforms. This versatile system allows for adaptability, accommodating single or dual-weapon setups and enabling mobile engagement at distances up to 2,000 meters (6,562 feet). In addition to the 30mm cannon, the R400 can also support various armaments, including machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, and anti-tank guided missiles, thanks to its “plug-and-play” functionality that ensures compatibility with other EOS weapon systems.

The significance of this contract is further underscored by the backdrop of the LAND 400 Phase 3 program, in which Australia has committed to the procurement of 129 Redback IFVs to replace its aging fleet of M113AS4 armored personnel carriers. Valued at 4 billion Australian dollars (approximately 2.63 billion USD), this ambitious program saw Hanwha Defence Australia’s Redback emerge victorious over notable contenders, including Rheinmetall Defence Australia’s KF41 Lynx, BAE Systems’ CV90 Mk 4, and General Dynamics Land Systems’ Ajax.

Production of the Redback IFVs is set to occur domestically, with deliveries expected to commence in 2027 and continue through 2028. Furthermore, Hanwha Defence Australia will assume responsibility for providing extensive training, spare parts, and ongoing support, ensuring robust sustainment practices throughout the final acceptance phase, projected to conclude in 2029.
