FN America Delivers 6.5mm Prototype Systems to US Department of Defense for Evaluation

Arms manufacturer FN America has taken a significant step in advancing military capabilities by delivering two prototype systems, both utilizing the new 6.5mm caliber, to the US Department of Defense for live evaluation. The samples, sent to the Irregular Warfare Technical Support Directorate (IWTSD), include the LICC-Individual Weapon System (LICC-IWS) and the LICC-Assault Machine Gun (LICC-AMG), along with suppressors, magazines, and a new ammunition family specifically designed for these systems.

The LICC-IWS is a magazine-fed rifle that is versatile enough to be offered in three distinct barrel lengths, catering to a variety of operational roles, from close quarters engagements to general purpose and designated marksman scenarios. This adaptability makes it an appealing choice for military units that require flexibility in the field.

On the other hand, the LICC-AMG is characterized as a lightweight, belt-fed machine gun that utilizes the same 6.5x43mm round, featuring a side-feed mechanism with light metallic links. This design aims not only to enhance portability but also to improve combat effectiveness by allowing for sustained fire without quickly exhausting ammunition supplies.

Notably, FN America has also introduced a stainless steel-cased ammunition variant, which represents a significant reduction in weight—approximately 20 percent lighter than traditional brass cases. This could prove crucial for troops who must carry extensive ammunition loads in demanding environments.

Several variants of the LICC systems, along with two suppressors, have already received national stock numbers, thereby enabling military units to requisition them for rigorous testing. The IWTSD’s evaluations are specifically designed to simulate the unpredictable conditions often encountered in irregular warfare and low-intensity conflicts. The assessments not only examine ballistic performance but also focus on aspects such as maintainability, transportability, and user-friendliness in high-stress scenarios.

Successful evaluation outcomes are often instrumental for defense firms, unlocking further government trials, prototype contracts, and potential pathways for fielding new equipment. The results from the IWTSD’s assessments will significantly influence future technical and procurement decisions within the military.

This delivery falls in line with a broader Pentagon initiative to reevaluate infantry calibers and enhance small-arms performance across its forces. In recent years, both U.S. and allied military branches have invested in testing alternative ammunition, including 6.8mm and other intermediate calibers, in response to performance gaps identified in combat situations.

In response, various manufacturers have introduced a range of new rifles, carbines, upgraded optics, and suppressors, while ensuring compatibility with existing logistical frameworks. For instance, SIG Sauer has made strides in advancing its 6.8mm offerings, including designs derived from the MCX Spear platform, aimed at extending effective range and terminal performance to meet modern combat requirements.
