In a significant statement during the United Nations Troop Contributing Countries conclave held in Delhi, Director General of Military Operations Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai reported that over 100 Pakistani soldiers were killed as a result of India’s targeted military operations along the Line of Control (LoC). This announcement follows the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which has heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries.
Lt Gen Ghai characterized the military response as a “swift, calibrated, and non-escalatory” maneuver, reflecting India’s evolving military strategy that integrates precision strikes with diplomatic and economic tools. He noted that the operations involved coordinated efforts of the Indian Air Force, which was deployed in response to an influx of drone activity from across the border, indicating a significant tactical shift.
During his address, Lt Gen Ghai pointed out that Pakistan’s acknowledgment of casualties, particularly through the distribution of posthumous gallantry awards on August 14, corroborates the extensive losses incurred. He detailed that Indian forces successfully targeted nine locations within Pakistan, demonstrating a combination of military precision, diplomatic engagement, and economic pressure. A notable move in this strategy was India’s temporary suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, aimed at further applying pressure on Islamabad.
Addressing military leaders from 30 nations, Ghai assured them of India’s preparedness for any potential retaliation from Pakistan. He emphasized that the Indian Army had strategically planned several steps ahead, preparing for contingency actions in anticipation of possible cross-border skirmishes. Secondary targets along the LoC were deliberately chosen to mitigate risks from expected exchanges of fire.
The efficiency of India’s operations compelled Pakistan to seek a cessation of hostilities within 88 hours, evident of the assertiveness of India’s military response. Lt Gen Ghai also recognized the operational readiness of the Indian Navy stationed in the Arabian Sea, highlighting their capability to escalate military action if necessary.
On the topic of accountability for the Pahalgam attack, he confirmed that the responsible terrorists were tracked and neutralized within 96 days, underscoring what he described as a “clinical” approach to securing justice and reinforcing India’s stance on counter-terrorism.
The developments mark a pivotal moment in the bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, with the situation remaining closely monitored by the international community.
