In a remarkable incident showcasing extraordinary bravery and quick thinking, an eight-month-old infant’s life was saved by Sepoy Sunil, an Ambulance Assistant from 456 Field Hospital, onboard the Rajdhani Express on October 13, 2025. The train was en route to Dibrugarh when, around 4:30 PM, the infant suddenly suffered from respiratory arrest, rendering the child unresponsive. The situation escalated quickly as the child’s mother fainted amid rising panic among other passengers.
Sepoy Sunil, who was traveling in the same coach after returning from leave, wasted no time in responding to the emergency. Demonstrating exceptional composure, he promptly assessed the infant’s condition and discovered the child had no pulse and was not breathing. Recognizing the gravity of the scenario, Sunil sprang into action.
He delicately placed the infant on a flat surface and began administering pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), utilizing two fingers for chest compressions followed by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. After performing two cycles of this lifesaving technique, signs of life began to reemerge in the infant.
Following his successful revival efforts, Sunil quickly coordinated with the train staff and the Railway Police to facilitate the infant’s safe evacuation for further medical assistance upon reaching Rangiya station. His swift and decisive actions were pivotal in transforming a life-threatening situation into a hopeful recovery, especially in an environment where immediate medical aid was unavailable.
The Indian Army has commended Sepoy Sunil for his remarkable medical skills, quick judgment, and resolute dedication to duty.
