In a groundbreaking moment for the nation, President Droupadi Murmu took a historic flight in a Rafale fighter aircraft on October 29, 2025, at Air Force Station Ambala in Haryana. This remarkable achievement marks her as the first President of India to pilot two different types of fighter jets within the Indian Air Force. In a previous sortie in 2023, she had flown the Sukhoi-30 MKI.
The flight was not only significant for its technical aspects but was also a poignant symbol of empowerment. After the sortie, President Murmu shared a memorable photograph with Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh, one of India’s pioneering women Rafale pilots. This image represents a broader narrative about the strength and capability of women in India’s armed forces.
Piloted by Group Captain Amit Gehani, the sortie lasted approximately 30 minutes, covering nearly 200 kilometers at an altitude of 15,000 feet and a speed of 700 km/h. Air Force Station Ambala has a historical significance as it is the first Indian Air Force base to have inducted the Rafale aircraft, manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France.
In her reflections post-flight, President Murmu characterized the experience as “unforgettable,” articulating that it instilled in her a renewed sense of pride regarding India’s defense capabilities. She extended her congratulations to the Indian Air Force and the exceptional team at Ambala for their efforts in organizing this significant event.
This momentous occasion not only highlights India’s advancing air power but also emphasizes the inclusivity of the armed forces, with women like Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh becoming role models for aspiring defense personnel across the country. The event underscores a commitment to fostering a diverse environment within the military, paving the way for future generations of women in defense.
