An 18-member Indian Army team has embarked on an ambitious expedition to conquer Mount Kangto, standing at 7,042 meters (23,103 feet) in Arunachal Pradesh. Dubbed “Josh in the hearts, Adventure at the Peak!” the mission was officially initiated by Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Gajraj Corps, from a forward base on November 3, 2025.
Mount Kangto, a striking emblem of the Eastern Himalayas, is revered for its natural beauty and formidable challenges. The last successful ascent of this peak occurred back in 1930, making this expedition a significant attempt to ascend a revered mountain nearly a century later.
The 18 soldiers of the Gajraj Corps will navigate treacherous icy ridges, steep glaciers, and rugged terrains, enduring extreme cold and scarce oxygen as they scale the peak. This undertaking is a testament to the grit, discipline, and teamwork entrenched in the Indian Army’s ethos. Moreover, the expedition aims to bolster qualities such as adventure, endurance, and leadership among its participants, all while reinforcing India’s strategic presence in this vital frontier region.
During the flag-off ceremony, Lt Gen Gambhir Singh praised the team’s bravery and resolve, underlining that their venture epitomizes both the adventurous spirit and operational readiness of the Indian Army. He expressed heartfelt wishes for the team’s success in their quest to raise the Tricolour on one of the most challenging summits in the Himalayas.
The Mount Kangto Expedition 2025 serves not only as a rigorous test of endurance and skill but also as a homage to India’s rich mountaineering tradition in the high Himalayas. By attempting to reach this long-unclimbed peak, the Gajraj Corps aspires to motivate and inspire a new generation of soldiers towards excellence, adventure, and a strong sense of national pride at the world’s rooftop.
