Lt Gen Rajiv Kumar Sahni Reviews Innovation-Driven Upgrades at 506 Army Base Workshop, Jabalpur

In a significant move towards modernizing military operations, Lt Gen Rajiv Kumar Sahni, Director General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (DGEME), visited the 506 Army Base Workshop in Jabalpur, highlighting the Indian Army’s commitment to transforming its armament capabilities. The visit was centered on the theme “Legacy to Lethal — Powered by Innovation,” underscoring a strong emphasis on technological advancement within the armed forces.

During his tour of this premier Centre of Excellence in Armament Engineering, Lt Gen Sahni examined a range of advanced initiatives that are instrumental in redefining the Army’s armament ecosystem. One of the key focuses of the visit was Project NAVYAS, which aims to automate legacy field guns. This major capability enhancement program is designed to extend the operational relevance of older artillery platforms through modern digital upgrades, making them more effective in contemporary warfare.

Additionally, Lt Gen Sahni reviewed the modernization of the iconic Bofors artillery system through electric vehicle (EV)-based repowering. This pioneering initiative seeks to merge sustainability with operational efficiency, ensuring that the artillery operates more quietly and cleanly while maintaining its formidable firepower. Such advancements illustrate the Army’s proactive approach towards integrating eco-friendly technologies in defense mechanisms.

The workshop also showcased various indigenous manufacturing processes, aligning with the government’s goal of achieving Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance, in defense production. These innovations signify a substantial pivot from traditional platforms to more sophisticated, tech-enabled systems that enhance precision, versatility, and mission endurance on the battlefield.

Appreciating the relentless dedication and technical expertise of personnel at the facility, Lt Gen Sahni emphasized the critical role these innovations play in bolstering operational readiness. He recognized the innovative mindset of all ranks involved and reiterated that their contributions are vital in ensuring the Indian Army remains agile, lethal, and prepared for future challenges. This visit marks a decisive step in the ongoing effort to integrate modern technology into India’s defense arsenal, fostering a more capable and responsive military force.
