Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized India’s transition into a “golden era of defence innovation” during his address at the Swavlamban 2025 event hosted at the Manekshaw Centre. This initiative showcased cutting-edge indigenous technologies developed by startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), reflecting a commitment to advancing national security and military capabilities.

During his speech, Singh highlighted the imperative for India to transition from a reactive to a proactive stance in addressing the evolving geopolitical and security landscape. He urged the private sector to embrace a “profit-plus” model that harmonizes business objectives with national interests. This approach, according to Singh, is essential for enhancing self-reliance and invigorating the defence ecosystem, making it “bigger, bolder, and faster.”

The Defence Minister underscored the crucial role of young innovators in forging this new era, asserting that the foundations are being laid through a combination of economic strength, strategic foresight, and technological advancements.

The exhibition at Swavlamban 2025 featured a variety of innovations tailored to meet the operational needs of India’s armed forces. Among the displayed technologies were advanced artificial intelligence systems, autonomous platforms, quantum innovations, stealth solutions, and smart ordnance. Nearly 80 startups and MSMEs participated, presenting deployable products that highlight the increasing sophistication of India’s defence-tech landscape.

Singh called for a deeper synergy between private industry, startups, research and development institutions, and government entities. He articulated an ambitious vision for the private sector to contribute over 50% to indigenous defence manufacturing, aiming to transition India from merely being a buyer to an innovative builder, and ultimately a global leader in defence technology.

The event was also attended by senior military personnel, including Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.

Emphasizing the significance of disruptive technologies and the development of indigenous capabilities, Swavlamban 2025 represents a major leap toward achieving strategic autonomy, cost efficiency, and improved combat readiness. Singh characterized this period as a transformational phase for India’s defence sector, reinforcing the country’s commitment to innovation and self-reliance in defence.
