In a significant move to boost tourism and infrastructure in Sikkim, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has inaugurated Cho La and Dok La, two strategically important border destinations, under the Bharat Ranbhoomi Darshan initiative. This initiative aims to promote responsible tourism while enhancing the livelihoods and infrastructure in remote border areas.
During the announcement, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of developing these border regions in accordance with the vision set by the Indian government. Bharat Ranbhoomi Darshan, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Tourism, is designed to celebrate India’s border heritage and battlefields while fostering socio-economic development in frontier villages.
Tamang elaborated on the alignment of this initiative with the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages Programme, which prioritizes the development of the least accessible areas. He pointed out that ongoing efforts by both central and state agencies are leading to rapid improvements in Sikkim’s border regions.
“Our idea is to develop the last village first,” Tamang stated. He expressed optimism about the positive changes brought about by the Vibrant Villages Programme, emphasizing that, with continued support from the Government of India, the Indian Army, and the Tourism Department, Cho La and Dok La are now accessible to tourists.
The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude towards the Government of India and the Indian Army for their ongoing support, assuring that the region’s infrastructure will continue to be enhanced to promote sustainable and safe tourism experiences.
Additionally, Tamang praised the Indian Army for organizing a Supercar Rally in the vicinity, recognizing the contributions of GOC Mr. Rathore and his team, along with the organizing committee, for their efforts in promoting tourism and improving connectivity.
The opening of Cho La and Dok La is anticipated to significantly enhance border tourism, improve accessibility, and contribute to the overall development of Sikkim’s frontier areas. With these strategic moves, the state is poised to cultivate its tourism potential while also ensuring that local communities benefit from the forthcoming influx of visitors.
