The Indian Navy marked a significant advancement in its maritime capabilities with the commissioning of INAS 335 ‘The Ospreys,’ its second MH-60R Seahawk helicopter squadron, at INS Hansa in Goa. The ceremony, which took place on December 17, 2025, was officiated by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), underscoring the Navy’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its aviation capabilities along the western seaboard.

This event followed the successful commissioning of the first MH-60R squadron in Kochi, Kerala, in March 2024, demonstrating a phased strategy in the induction of advanced multi-role helicopters designed to meet various operational requirements.

The commissioning ceremony was rich in tradition and attended by numerous high-ranking officials. Captain Dhirender Bisht, Commanding Officer of INAS 335, formally read out the Commissioning Warrant, after which Mrs. Laila Swaminathan, President of the Naval Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), Western Region, unveiled the Commissioning Plaque. The event concluded with a spectacular water cannon salute, symbolizing the squadron’s official induction into the naval fleet.

Prominent figures in attendance included Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command; Vice Admiral Rahul Vilas Gokhale, Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command; and Rear Admiral Ajay D Theophilus, Flag Officer Commanding Goa Naval Area and Flag Officer Naval Aviation. The presence of Admiral Karambir Singh (Retd), a former Chief of the Naval Staff, along with veterans and distinguished guests, added to the ceremony’s significance.

The MH-60R Seahawk helicopter is recognized for its versatility and advanced capabilities, making it a force multiplier for the Indian Navy. The helicopter is designed for a variety of critical operations, including Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), Search and Rescue (SAR), Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC), and Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP). The induction of INAS 335 is anticipated to greatly enhance the Navy’s integral aviation capacity, expanding its surveillance capabilities and operational reach in the vital waters of the Western Seaboard.

With the establishment of ‘The Ospreys’ squadron, the Indian Navy emphasizes its commitment to modernization and ensuring robust maritime security. This move reflects the Navy’s focus on maintaining high levels of operational readiness to address the evolving security challenges within the Indian Ocean Region. The successful introduction of advanced airframes and technologies signifies a pivotal step in the Navy’s strategic plan to safeguard national interests and enhance regional stability in a complex maritime environment.
