In a recent visit to a frontline fighter squadron, Air Marshal JS Mann, the Senior Air Staff Officer of the Western Air Command, engaged closely with personnel from The Flying Lances. His role as Commodore Commandant underscored the importance of leadership within the ranks of the Indian Air Force.
During his visit, Air Marshal Mann took the opportunity to commend the squadron for its remarkable operational performance and storied history. He highlighted The Flying Lances as one of the most decorated squadrons in the Indian Air Force, celebrating their achievements which include four Vir Chakra (VrC), two Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) [VM (G)], and nine Mention-in-Despatches (M-in-D).
In a demonstration of hands-on leadership, he conducted a review of the squadron’s operational readiness, combat preparedness, and mission capabilities. Additionally, he undertook an operational sortie, which provided him with valuable insights into the squadron’s flying standards and mission execution.
Air Marshal Mann specifically praised the technical staff for their diligence in maintaining high aircraft serviceability rates, thereby ensuring the availability of aircraft for missions. He also applauded the aircrew for their skill, professionalism, and attention to operational precision, recognizing that these competencies are crucial for sustaining the squadron’s esteemed reputation.
Beyond operational assessments, Air Marshal Mann engaged in sports and social activities with both squadron personnel and their families, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. He noted that such cohesion is essential for sustaining morale and enhancing overall operational effectiveness.
