Captain Harshita Raghav to Lead Historic Animal Contingent in Republic Day Parade 2026

Captain Harshita Raghav of the Indian Army’s Remount Veterinary Corps is set to make history as she commands a specially curated animal contingent during the 77th Republic Day Parade on January 26, 2026. This significant milestone marks the first time the Indian Army’s animal contingent will participate in the parade along Kartavya Path.

Captain Raghav, a second-generation military officer and part of the inaugural cohort of women commissioned into the RVC, brings a wealth of knowledge to her role. A graduate of Mumbai Veterinary College, she earned her BVSc & AH degree and later pursued an MVSc in Wildlife Science. Her selection as contingent commander showcases a pioneering achievement for women in a specialized corps dedicated to the training and deployment of animals in military settings.

The upcoming parade will feature an impressive lineup of animals that underscore their crucial role in diverse terrains and modern military applications. The contingent will include two Bactrian camels, four Zanskar ponies, four raptors trained for anti-drone operations, ten Indian-breed Army dogs representing five indigenous varieties, and six conventional military dogs. This diverse composition reflects the RVC’s cutting-edge expertise in animal training, employing neuroscience-based methods to enhance the operational readiness of these animals.

In a video shared on social media, Captain Raghav expressed her pride in leading such a unique contingent, highlighting its visual appeal and the specialized preparation that has gone into the display. She noted that the RVC is currently the “centre of attraction” due to the innovative showcase of animals that illustrate both traditional and contemporary military applications.

Captain Raghav’s achievements have garnered immense pride from her alma mater, Mumbai Veterinary College, as well as various defence training institutions and alumni networks. Her journey also includes significant contributions to veterinary science, including discussions around animal health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The participation of the RVC contingent in the Republic Day Parade exemplifies the Indian Army’s dedication to inclusivity, innovation, and recognition of specialized units. As rehearsals for the parade continue, they serve to highlight India’s military heritage, cultural diversity, and evolving capabilities, setting the stage for a landmark event in the history of the Indian armed forces.
