In a notable development for gender representation within the Indian military, Assistant Commandant Nishi Sharma of the Indian Coast Guard is set to lead the all-women contingent during this year’s Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path. This milestone not only highlights her leadership qualities but also underscores the organization’s commitment to gender inclusion in both operational roles and ceremonial duties. For Assistant Commandant Sharma, this will be her second participation in the esteemed national event, reinforcing her ongoing dedication to service and excellence.
Sharma comes from a distinguished military lineage, as a second-generation defence professional. Her father and brother currently serve in the Indian Army, which instilled in her the values of discipline, honour, and national duty from a young age. Receiving her foundational education at an Army Public School further shaped her aspirations toward a career in uniformed service. She later completed her undergraduate studies at Miranda House, University of Delhi, before embarking on her journey in the Indian Coast Guard.
Throughout her career, Assistant Commandant Sharma has demonstrated exceptional leadership and competence. Notably, she has served as an instructor at the prestigious Indian Naval Academy (INA) in Ezhimala, Kerala. In this capacity, she plays a pivotal role in training and developing the future officers of the naval and coast guard services, demonstrating her ability to inspire and mentor the next generation of maritime defenders.
The all-women contingent under her command includes Assistant Commandants Apurva Gautam Hore, Lakshita, and Hardik, and will showcase India’s maritime vigilance, reflecting the country’s extensive coastline of over 11,000 kilometers. The Indian Coast Guard has been at the forefront of empowering women officers in both combat and leadership roles, and this contingent stands as a testament to that progressive tradition.
Recently, Assistant Commandant Sharma showcased her physical capabilities by securing first place in the female category of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) Triathlon. This grueling competition involved a 3.8 km sea swim, 180 km cycling, and a 42.2 km marathon run. Her achievement not only brought significant recognition to the Indian Coast Guard but also exemplified her embodiment of Nari Shakti—the strength and resilience of women in uniform.
The journey of Assistant Commandant Nishi Sharma, from a background steeped in military values to her current role commanding a prominent national contingent, serves as an inspiring narrative of perseverance, sacrifice, and excellence. Her achievements resonate widely, motivating aspiring defence personnel throughout India and illustrating how unwavering dedication to one’s duty can lead to significant contributions to the nation’s security and pride.
