Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense has entered into a significant agreement with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, committing $250 million for the local production of the Spike Firefly loitering munition, referred to as Maoz in Hebrew. This partnership marks a notable step in enhancing Vietnam’s defense capabilities, particularly in the realm of advanced weaponry.
The production of the Spike Firefly will take place in Vietnam, leveraging a technology transfer from Israel to facilitate the project. A Vietnamese company will manage the production facility once it secures the necessary licenses from Israeli authorities, ensuring a streamlined process in establishing local manufacturing capabilities for this advanced munitions system.
The Spike Firefly is designed specifically for urban warfare, addressing the challenges associated with combat in densely populated areas. Weighing just 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds), it is particularly effective where conventional fire support methods are hindered by limited situational awareness and the potential risk to civilian lives.
Armed with either a 350-gram (12.6-ounce) fragmentation or a shaped-charge warhead, the Spike Firefly can engage targets effectively from a range of up to 500 meters (1,640 feet) in urban environments and up to 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) in more open terrains. This versatility enhances its operational applicability across different battlefield scenarios.
The endurance of the Spike Firefly is notable, allowing for flight times between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on its configuration with one or two battery packs. Additionally, it can maintain a standby mode for up to two hours, providing flexibility during operations.
The Israel Defense Forces have previously utilized the Spike Firefly in operational contexts, notably during the conflicts in Gaza following the attacks by Hamas on October 7, showcasing its efficacy in real-world combat situations. This collaboration between Vietnam and Israel not only underscores a growing defense partnership but also highlights strategic advancements in Vietnam’s military capabilities.
