Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, currently serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command, recently visited the 16th Light Cavalry to mark its 250th Raising Day. This event highlighted the rich and illustrious legacy of the regiment, which holds the distinction of being the oldest armoured unit in the Indian Army and the first to be Indianised in 1922.
The 16th Light Cavalry’s esteemed combat history is notable for its aggressive offensive spirit and high levels of professionalism. The regimentโs notable achievements include its significant role in capturing Gadgor during the 1965 Indo-Pak war, a feat that earned the unit the Theatre Honour Punjab. In the following 1971 war, they executed a major armoured thrust through the Shakargarh Bulge, further solidifying their reputation. Additionally, the unit stands out as the only armoured regiment involved in the Kargil conflict during Operation Vijay in 1999, where they played a crucial role in the challenging capture of Tololing at high altitudes.
During his visit, Lieutenant General Seth paid tribute to the regiment’s fallen soldiers by participating in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial. He also reviewed a Mounted Parade, showcasing the regimentโs ceremonial excellence. Engaging warmly with veterans and their families, he acknowledged their invaluable contributions to preserving the regimental ethos and fostering the spirit of service that resonates through generations.
In his address to all ranks, the Army Commander urged the soldiers to maintain exceptional professionalism and operational agility. He underscored the importance of embracing technological advancements to counter evolving threats effectively. Lt Gen Seth emphasized the need for upholding the regiment’s long-standing values of valour, discipline, and duty as they continue to serve the nation.
