Netherlands MoD Considers Multi-Billion Dollar Contract for Armored Vehicles

The Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD) is reportedly in discussions to award a significant multi-billion-dollar contract to Van Halteren Technologies, a family-owned company based in Bunschoten. This contract entails the production of approximately 400 armored combat support vehicles (ACSVs) intended for use by the Royal Netherlands Army. Sources indicate that Van Halteren is the leading candidate among around 20 firms competing for this lucrative program.

The ACSV fleet is designed to enhance the operational capabilities of front-line units, providing crucial support in areas such as transport, logistics, maintenance, and recovery. Furthermore, the vehicles are expected to feature specialized variants equipped with advanced technologies like anti-drone cannons and short-range anti-aircraft systems, thereby increasing their versatility on the battlefield.

Earlier analysis from 2025 indicated that the MoD had called for over 100 armored platforms specifically to support the Dutch Armyโ€™s 43rd Mechanized Brigade. The anticipated timeline for the delivery of these platforms is set between 2029 and 2031.

In addition, Van Halteren Technologies has a well-established track record, supplying critical components and subsystems to various major combat platforms currently operated by the Netherlands Armed Forces. These include the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle, the Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzer, the Fennek reconnaissance vehicle, and the Leopard 2 main battle tank.

The company is also eyeing further growth by aiming to partake in the construction of four Orka-class submarines, a project that involves collaboration with Franceโ€™s Naval Group following an order placed by the Netherlands last year.

The potential decision to award the armored vehicle contract to a domestic supplier reflects the Netherlands’ commitment to bolstering its own defense industry. This move is in line with the countryโ€™s strategy to increase defense spending and align with NATOโ€™s goal of allocating 2 percent of GDP to defense initiatives. By investing in local capabilities, the Dutch government aims to ensure that defense expenditures benefit the national industrial base while enhancing military readiness.
