In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed strong support for Iran during a recent phone call with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. The discussion took place amid increased military actions initiated by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets, which have reportedly resulted in hundreds of casualties since the strikes began on Saturday.
Wang emphasized Beijing’s commitment to Iran’s sovereignty and security, stating, “China cherishes the traditional friendship between China and Iran.” He reiterated the need for Iran to defend its rights and national dignity, reinforcing China’s stance against aggression from the U.S. and Israel. According to state broadcaster CCTV, Wang called on these nations to cease military operations immediately, warning against further escalation that could lead to wider conflict across the region.
In a separate conversation with Omanโs Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, Wang criticized the military actions of the U.S. and Israel, claiming they violate the principles of the United Nations Charter. He suggested that these nations are intentionally provoking a war against Iran and reiterated China’s willingness to contribute to peace efforts via the UN Security Council.
Wang also communicated with French Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, where he cautioned that current global developments could lead to a “regression to the law of the jungle.” He asserted that major powers should not abuse their military strength to attack other nations, underscoring the importance of returning to diplomatic solutions regarding issues such as the Iranian nuclear matter.
As the situation continues to develop, reports indicate that four U.S. military personnel have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict, while U.S. President Donald Trump has alerted citizens that the confrontation with Iran could extend for several weeks. The international community remains on high alert as the potential for escalation looms large.
