The US Army executed a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System Rapid Infiltration (HIRAIN) mission in Thailand as part of Exercise Cobra Gold, showcasing the capabilities of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). This truck-mounted multiple rocket launcher was deployed under the innovative HIRAIN operational method, which enables the HIMARS launcher to be rapidly airlifted, conduct its firing mission, and redeploy, all within a notably compressed timeframe.
The HIRAIN process involves airlifting the HIMARS launcher using aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules or the C-17 Globemaster III. These aircraft transport the launcher from a staging location to a forward operating base, typically at austere airfields. Upon landing, the HIMARS system is offloaded from the aircraft and quickly moved into an operational position where it can prepare for its mission and, once completed, is reloaded for departure. This approach significantly minimizes reliance on ground convoys, particularly in territories where the terrain or security conditions pose challenges to surface transportation.
During the training exercise, soldiers cooperated closely with US Air Force aircrew to orchestrate the logistics of the launcherโs air movement. The joint operation emphasized synchronization between ground and air units, covering essential procedures for aircraft loading as well as coordinating mission timing effectively. Army personnel indicated that the entire interval from when a mission order is received to aircraft loading typically takes less than a day, with loading times often being even faster than expected. This rapid response capability aims to decrease the system’s exposure to potential threats while ensuring it can deploy, fire, and then relocate quickly.
In the context of the Indo-Pacific region, Lt. Col. Travis Hertlein, commander of the 1st Battalion, 94th Field Artillery Regiment, highlighted the significance of HIRAIN. He noted that operations often involve deploying small units from islands characterized by austere airports and limited resources, emphasizing that HIRAIN prepares the forces to operate in these environments while providing extended reach and 24/7 precision fire capabilities.
Furthermore, Air Force personnel pointed out the meticulous planning required for such missions, which encompasses considerations like runway length, aircraft performance, and prevailing weather conditions to ensure the safe transport of heavy equipment. The Cobra Gold exercise also facilitated coordination with the Royal Thai Army and other participating forces, enhancing joint and multinational training aimed at improving mobility and long-range fire support in complex operational environments.
