US Army Awards $49.9 Million Contract to Elbit Systems for Helicopter Heads-Up Displays

In a significant development for military aviation, the US Army has awarded a contract worth $49.9 million to Elbit Systems America for the production of advanced heads-up displays (HUDs) tailored for its UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleets. This contract forms an integral part of the Army’s Air Soldier System program, which aims to enhance the situational awareness and survivability of rotorcraft aircrews through a suite of lightweight, advanced gear.

The colorized Air Warrior HUD is designed to project essential flight and mission data directly into the aircrew’s line of sight. This innovation allows pilots and crew members to maintain a head-up posture, keeping their focus on the external environment rather than becoming distracted by cockpit instruments. This capability is particularly crucial in combat situations where situational awareness can be the difference between success and failure.

The new HUDs are part of a gradual transition to a more efficient system that will replace the older, heavier equipment from the Air Warrior system, which has been in use since its introduction in 2004. The contract not only encompasses the production of these advanced displays but also includes post-production support, ensuring that the Army receives comprehensive assistance throughout the lifespan of the equipment.

Elbit America emphasizes its commitment to improving operational effectiveness through sophisticated display technologies. “Since our inception, Elbit America has been dedicated to improving situational awareness through sophisticated displays that enhance a user’s understanding of the conditions outside their aircraft or vehicle,” stated Scott Tumpak, the Senior Vice President of Electronic Systems at Elbit America.

Luke Savoie, the President and CEO of Elbit America, underscored the importance of the technology in high-stakes environments, remarking, “In high-stakes environments, you don’t have time for uncertainty. Elbit America delivers combat-proven heads-up displays that provide aircrew the confidence to see first, act first, and win.”

This contract is set to run through December 2030, highlighting the Army’s focus on investing in advanced technologies to bolster the capabilities of its aircrews in challenging operational landscapes.
