Five Children Killed in Conflict-Ridden South Kordofan, Sudan

Five children tragically lost their lives over the weekend in Dilling, a town in South Kordofan, amid ongoing conflict in Sudan. UNICEF reported on Tuesday that, in addition to the fatalities, three other children sustained injuries during the violent unfolding of events, reflecting the deepening humanitarian crisis in the region.

The turmoil stems from an intense struggle for control between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). On Saturday, the army claimed it successfully repelled a third wave of attacks orchestrated by the RSF in Dilling, asserting that they inflicted substantial casualties on their adversaries.

Local media reports further indicated that drone strikes attributed to the RSF have wreaked havoc, resulting in the deaths of approximately ten individuals, with women and children among the casualties, and leaving dozens more wounded. The ongoing conflict complicates efforts to verify casualty figures, particularly in Sudan’s remote and hard-to-reach areas.

The violence has escalated over the past few months, with both the army and paramilitary forces frequently exchanging accusations regarding lethal drone strikes. Fighting has especially intensified in Kordofan and regions bordering Ethiopia and Chad.

In a broader context, the Sudanese army announced the apprehension of several alleged “foreign mercenaries” from South Sudan during the clashes in Dilling, a revelation that has intensified scrutiny of external influences in the conflict. Sources close to the army confirmed the detention of individuals identified as foreigners from neighboring countries.

On Monday, a foreign minister aligned with the Sudanese army reached out to the UN special envoy for the Horn of Africa, urging for a deeper investigation into the involvement of mercenaries and external support for the RSF.

As the conflict drags on for nearly three years, it has inflicted devastating consequences, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing over 11 million people. The United Nations has characterized the situation in Sudan as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, highlighting the dire need for international attention and intervention.
