Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain has officially taken charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Southern Command, succeeding Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, who has moved on to become the Vice Chief of Army Staff. This transition reflects a continued commitment to strong military leadership within the Indian Army.
Lt Gen Jain, a distinguished alumnus of the National Defence Academy, brings nearly four decades of extensive experience in varied operational environments to his new role. He was commissioned into the MAHAR Regiment in June 1988 and has held numerous significant command assignments. These include leadership roles in an Infantry Battalion—which comprised a United Nations mission in South Sudan—an Infantry Brigade within a Strike Corps, a Counter Insurgency Force, and a pivotal Corps in the Northern Command.
His operational background is extensive, having participated in Operation Pawan and serving as a Military Observer with the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia. Additionally, he has undertaken multiple assignments in high-altitude and counter-insurgency zones along the Line of Control and in the Northeast region of India. As the Colonel of the MAHAR Regiment, he has also contributed to the development and training of soldiers in this esteemed division.
Before being appointed to the Southern Command, Lt Gen Jain served as the Chief of Staff within the same command, where he played a vital role in capability development, force restructuring, and ensuring operational preparedness.
In terms of professional development, Lt Gen Jain has completed advanced military courses, including the Higher Command Course at the Army War College and the National Defence Course in Kenya. His contributions to the military have been recognized through prestigious awards, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Sena Medal (SM).
During the ceremonial assumption of command, Lt Gen Jain paid homage at the Southern Command War Memorial and reviewed a ceremonial Guard of Honour, marking the solemnity of the occasion.
In his inaugural address as GOC-in-C, he outlined a vision focused on several key areas, including maintaining operational readiness across diverse terrains—such as deserts, coastal regions, and islands. He highlighted the importance of strengthening joint operations and fostering indigenous capability development, alongside promoting the absorption of new technologies as outlined in the JAI framework. Moreover, he stressed the necessity of upholding high standards of professionalism and combat readiness.
The appointment of Lt Gen Sandeep Jain signifies a strategic leadership transition aimed at modernizing military operations and enhancing readiness to tackle the evolving security challenges across the Southern Command’s expansive jurisdiction.
