The Ministry of Defence has entered into substantial contracts valued at ₹975 crore with Bharat Earth Movers Limited and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics India Private Limited. These agreements focus on the procurement of TRAWL Assembly systems specifically designed for the T-72 and T-90 tanks.
The signing ceremony, attended by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, took place in New Delhi. This initiative is pivotal in enhancing the Indian Army’s operational capabilities, particularly in the realm of battlefield mobility.
The TRAWL system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), serves as critical combat engineering equipment. Its primary functions include:
– Establishing safe passage lanes for vehicles through minefields,
– Disrupting anti-tank mines equipped with magnetic proximity fuses,
– Enhancing the mobility of armored formations within combat zones.
The integration of TRAWL assemblies is anticipated to significantly boost the combat effectiveness and survivability of the Indian Army’s armored units, especially during offensive operations in areas heavily laden with mines.
Moreover, this procurement aligns with India’s broader initiative of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India, as it falls under the ‘Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category. This move underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering self-sufficiency in defense production.
The project is also expected to generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities, thereby promoting the involvement of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the defense manufacturing landscape. This initiative is poised to strengthen India’s indigenous defense industrial ecosystem.
In conclusion, this deal marks a significant advance in modernizing India’s armored capabilities, while simultaneously promoting domestic innovation and reducing reliance on foreign defense systems.
