The Border Security Force (BSF) has expressed profound sorrow following the passing of Shri B.N. Sharma (Bhola Nath Sharma), a distinguished retired Inspector General who dedicated decades of service to the organization. This announcement was made via the BSF’s official account on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

In a heartfelt statement, the Director General of the BSF, alongside personnel from all ranks, conveyed their condolences, saying, “DG BSF & All Ranks express heartfelt condolences on demise of Shri B.N. Sharma, IG (Retd). Prahari Parivar stands firm with his family in these trying times.” The message, which included hashtags like #eShraddhanjali and #JaiHind, underscored the profound sense of loss felt within the BSF community.

Sharma began his journey with the BSF in 1977, taking up the role of Assistant Commandant in the ACDE batch. Over the years, he built a distinguished career focusing on border management and internal security, serving across various operational theaters in the country. Notably, he held the position of Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the Governor of Mizoram from 1982 to 1987, a role that showcased his professionalism and reliability.

Throughout his career, Sharma rose through the ranks to ultimately become Inspector General, retiring after a long and dedicated tenure. His service was characterized by a steadfast commitment to enhancing border security, maintaining internal stability, and upholding national integrity.

Even post-retirement, Sharma remained an active voice in public discussions surrounding security issues. He regularly shared insights on key topics such as the necessity of extending BSF jurisdiction for improved coordination in internal security, the challenges facing Punjab, and the importance of professional policing. He was also a strong advocate for the mental well-being of security personnel, emphasizing the need for balanced postings to alleviate stress in high-pressure situations.

Sharma’s engagement with the community through interviews, discussions, and social media helped keep important conversations about border management and national security alive. His extensive field experience garnered him respect not only from serving personnel but also from the broader strategic community.

Following the announcement of his passing, tributes poured in from former colleagues, veterans, and citizens nationwide. Many remembered him as a dignified officer and brave leader, highlighting his commitment to his nation. Descriptions of him as a “noble and dignified soul” reflect the esteem in which he was held, and his dedication is expected to inspire future generations.

The BSF, often referred to as the “Prahari Parivar,” has assured its full support to Sharma’s bereaved family during this challenging time. His death represents a significant loss of an experienced officer who played a crucial role in strengthening India’s borders and contributing to the country’s security framework.

At this time, details surrounding the cause of his death and funeral arrangements have not been publicly disclosed.

Shri B.N. Sharma’s legacy stands as a testament to the ethos of the BSF, encapsulated in their motto, “Duty Unto Death.” His dedication, integrity, and patriotism will be long remembered with respect and gratitude.
