In a significant leadership change, Lieutenant General Balbir Singh has been appointed as the new General Officer Commanding of the Chinar Corps, a key military formation in Jammu & Kashmir. Effective May 1, 2026, Lt Gen Singh will take over responsibilities crucial for regional security and stability.
Bringing with him a wealth of experience, Lt Gen Singh has a proven track record in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, as well as operational leadership in the Kashmir Valley. His previous roles, including Major General General Staff (MGGS) of Northern Command and GOC of the Counter Insurgency Force (Victor Force) in South Kashmir, underscore his deep understanding of the complex security environment in the region. Additionally, he has commanded the 1 Sector Rashtriya Rifles, fortifying his operational credentials.
Headquartered in Srinagar, the Chinar Corps plays a vital role in guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, conducting internal security and counter-terror operations, and maintaining stability in the region. The strategic importance of this formation cannot be overstated, as it directly influences the security dynamics in one of the most sensitive areas of the country.
Lt Gen Singh succeeds Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava, who has been promoted to Quarter Master General (QMG) at Army Headquarters in New Delhi. During Lt Gen Srivastava’s tenure as Corps Commander, he oversaw significant counter-terror operations, including Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. His leadership was noted for enhancing synergy among security forces and emphasizing stability and effective civil-military engagement in the Valley.
The transition in command highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to experienced leadership in sensitive operational areas, with a focus on rotational command for senior officers. These appointments are part of a broader strategy to ensure sustained focus on counter-terrorism efforts and regional stability in one of India’s most challenging security landscapes.
