Raytheon has secured a substantial contract valued at $441.6 million to supply Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T) missiles as part of the ongoing Operation Epic Fury, which aligns with the U.S. military’s strategic efforts against Iran. This contract, recent in the context of a broader 2023 framework, brings the total program value to an impressive $2.4 billion, a significant increase from its previous total of $1.6 billion.
The work associated with this latest order will take place in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and is scheduled for completion by September 2026. Coordination for this project will be managed in conjunction with the U.S. Army Contracting Command’s Aviation Logistics unit located at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, which is responsible for overseeing this initiative.
The GEM-T missile is designed as a surface-to-air interceptor, offering critical protection for military installations and personnel against a variety of airborne threats, including tactical ballistic missiles. It employs a sophisticated terminal-phase guidance system that utilizes real-time sensor data to update targeting information. This capability allows the GEM-T to adjust its flight path dynamically, ensuring precision in reaching its designated target.
In operational scenarios, the GEM-T missile can cover a range of approximately 160 kilometers (99 miles). Currently, the U.S. Armed Forces maintain about 50 Patriot batteries, with around 30 positioned within the United States and 20 deployed in various locations around the globe. This recent contract not only underscores Raytheon’s ongoing role in enhancing U.S. military capabilities but also reflects the escalating commitment to modernizing aerial defense systems amid evolving global threats.
