In a deeply emotional ceremony marked by grief and solemnity, Major Harshit Sharma, an Indian Army officer, laid his sister, Twisha Sharma, to rest at the Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat cremation ground in Bhopal. The former model and actor, aged 33, was married to Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh in December 2025. Her passing on May 12, 2026, came under tragic circumstances, leading to a prolonged wait for her family as they sought answers surrounding her death.

Twisha’s mortal remains were released to the family after a second post-mortem examination conducted by a four-member team from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The ceremony took place after the completion of the autopsy on Sunday evening. Family members, including Twisha’s inconsolable parents, expressed their grief through a tearful farewell, observing traditional Hindu rites alongside floral tributes.

Major Harshit Sharma, adorned in formal attire, lit the funeral pyre, embodying his brotherly duty during this harrowing time. Emotional scenes unfolded as the family prepared the pyre, with the delay in the last rites causing distress and raising concerns over the breach of traditional mourning practices.

Amidst their mourning, Major Sharma shared a heartfelt tribute to Twisha, describing her as an “emotional, caring and loving person.” He expressed his family’s hope for justice in the ongoing legal proceedings, emphasizing the importance of transparency in the investigation. Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, conveyed a profound sense of loss, reflecting on their daughter’s aspirations and the injustice surrounding her untimely death. He expressed gratitude for the public support and confidence in the judicial process, affirming his belief that the case would restore faith in the system.

The family raised concerns regarding the initial post-mortem, insisting on the second examination to ensure an unbiased investigation. Allegations have surfaced, claiming that Twisha experienced dowry harassment and mental torture at the hands of her husband and his family, leading to accusations of abetment to suicide. Following her death, an FIR was lodged against Samarth Singh and his mother, Giribala Singh.

Samarth Singh initially eluded arrest for nearly ten days before surrendering in Jabalpur on May 22. A Bhopal court subsequently remanded him for police custody, emphasizing the need for further interrogation. The in-laws have continued to categorically deny the dowry allegations, maintaining that Twisha’s death was a suicide and pledging full cooperation with authorities.

The case has garnered significant national attention, prompting the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance under the title concerning alleged procedural discrepancies in Twisha’s death. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant is set to discuss the matter soon, with the Madhya Pradesh government proposing a transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

As the investigation unfolds, Dr. Sudhir Gupta from AIIMS Delhi noted the necessity for detailed laboratory tests to further understand the autopsy findings. The team is expected to return to Delhi with samples and documentation for analysis.

While the cremation provided a measure of closure to Twisha’s family, their quest for justice remains urgent amid scrutiny surrounding her death. The family continues to demand accountability, transparent proceedings, and justice for their beloved daughter, as the case underscores broader societal concerns regarding dowry-related violence and the integrity of legal investigations. With the Supreme Court preparing to further examine the case, the focus remains on ensuring a fair resolution in this tragic circumstance.
