The U.S. government has made a significant investment of $20.2 million in AeroVironment (AV) to enhance production capabilities for the Freedom Eagle-1 (FE-1) kinetic counter-drone missile. This funding will facilitate the expansion of AV’s facility in Huntsville, Alabama, which will grow by 24,000 square feet to serve as a comprehensive hub for system-level integration, manufacturing, and production of the FE-1 interceptor.
The expansion aims to ramp up low-rate initial production quantities and expedite full-rate production to address the urgent operational needs of the U.S. Army and various Combatant Commands. Wahid Nawabi, Chairman, President, and CEO of AeroVironment, highlighted the strategic significance of this expansion, stating that it places AV at the heart of the Army’s air and missile defense framework. This will enable enhanced integration, faster development cycles, and more efficient large-scale production.
This investment builds upon a previous contract awarded to AV in October 2025, valued at $95.9 million, for the production and delivery of the FE-1 as part of the U.S. Army’s Next-Generation Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System Missile and Long-Range Kinetic Interceptor programs.
The Freedom Eagle-1 is designed as an affordable yet high-performance interceptor, capable of targeting larger and more sophisticated drones, particularly those categorized as Group 2 and 3 uncrewed aerial systems. Additionally, the FE-1 is effective against smaller drones as well as fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.
The development of the FE-1 has been remarkably rapid, achieving its first flight just 107 days after the initial design phase, a feat that underscores the urgency and importance of counter-drone technologies in current military operations. The system has already reached several key milestones, including successful testing of its dual-thrust solid rocket motor, warhead detonation, and controlled test vehicle launches.
