In a recent statement, Lieutenant Colonel Anuj Singh of the Indian Army emphasized the enduring bond of “brotherhood” and trust between India and Sri Lanka amid the humanitarian relief efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025. The cyclone left a trail of destruction across the island nation, severing connectivity and isolating numerous communities from essential services.
Describing the operation as “Operation Sagar Bandhu,” Lt Col Singh explained that the Indian Armed Forces were deployed as first responders to assist Sri Lanka in mitigating the aftermath of the cyclone. The storm wreaked havoc, washing away vital bridges, triggering landslides, and flooding roads, which left many without access to schools, medical aid, and other necessary services.
As a member of the Indian Army’s 48-member Engineer Task Force, Lt Col Singh noted the multitude of challenges the team faced, including treacherous terrain and heavy inundation. However, through meticulous planning, reconnaissance, and close coordination with Sri Lankan authorities, the Indian military teams successfully reestablished critical lines of communication.
A key aspect of the mission was the strategic use of Bailey bridges, which were airlifted from India using Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. These modular bridges were erected swiftly to reconnect isolated areas, facilitating movement for civilians, relief supplies, and emergency services.
Lt Col Singh highlighted the collaborative spirit of the operation, stating that Indian Army engineers worked “shoulder to shoulder” with the Sri Lanka Army and local agencies throughout the mission. He characterized these efforts as a testament to the strong camaraderie and mutual trust that underpin the partnership between the two nations.
The execution of Operation Sagar Bandhu involved not only the Indian Army but also the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, which collectively delivered relief materials, medical assistance, engineering support, and satellite internet connectivity to the affected regions.
Officials have stated that the successful mission reinforces India’s role as a dependable regional first responder and serves to highlight the deepening humanitarian and strategic partnership between India and Sri Lanka during times of crisis.
