Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, AVSM, has officially taken command as the 20th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN) as of June 1, 2026. In a ceremonial tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes, he laid a wreath and subsequently reviewed a Combined Services Guard of Honour, underscoring the importance of this integrated operational command that encompasses personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
With a wealth of operational, command, and strategic leadership experience, Vice Admiral McCarty is a highly regarded naval officer. His distinguished career includes commanding several frontline warships and leading the Western Fleet, one of the Indian Navy’s crucial operational formations.
In previous key roles, McCarty served as Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, where he played a pivotal role in training and mentoring future naval leaders. He also acted as India’s Defence Adviser to Singapore, where he contributed to enhancing defence diplomacy and fostering bilateral military cooperation.
Before his current appointment, he was the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Doctrine, Organisation & Training) at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. In that capacity, he significantly advanced joint capability development, military integration, and operational synergy between the three services.
Officials have highlighted that his extensive experience in joint operations, maritime security, and strategic planning positions him perfectly to lead the Andaman and Nicobar Command. This command is a crucial component in safeguarding India’s interests in the Indian Ocean Region and the broader Indo-Pacific.
As the Commander-in-Chief, Vice Admiral McCarty will oversee the operational readiness and integrated functioning of India’s only tri-service theatre command. This role is vital for maritime security, force projection, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and maintaining regional stability.
