Major Anshul Baltoo of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and 32 Assam Rifles has been honored with the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, recognizing his extraordinary bravery, exceptional leadership, and steadfast dedication during a counter-insurgency operation in Assam.
The award presentation took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, officiated by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026.
The pivotal event occurred on April 29, 2025, when Major Baltoo responded to actionable intelligence indicating the presence of armed militants in the Dima Hasao district of Assam. Leading a high-risk cordon and search operation through treacherous terrain, he and his team encountered fierce and sustained fire from the militants, who also attempted to escape into the dense jungle.
Amid challenging weather conditions and adverse terrain, Major Baltoo exemplified remarkable determination and tactical skill, refusing to allow the militants to regroup or evade capture. He maintained relentless pressure on the fleeing insurgents and orchestrated a thorough day-long search operation, skillfully keeping his troops motivated and focused under extreme pressure.
During the operation, he confronted a militant attempting to retrieve a weapon and prepare for an attack. Displaying extraordinary courage and quick thinking, Major Baltoo engaged the insurgent in close quarters, successfully neutralizing the threat, thereby safeguarding his men.
The operation concluded with significant achievements for the security forces, including the neutralization of three armed militants and the recovery of a substantial cache of weapons and military equipment, which notably included three AK-47 rifles and two 9mm pistols. This successful mission has dealt a severe blow to the militant network operating within the region.
Major Baltoo’s composed leadership and fearless conduct inspired his troops, ensuring mission success even under challenging circumstances, and reflecting the highest standards of military professionalism.
Hailing from Ghunsa village in Jubbal tehsil, Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, Major Baltoo’s commendable feat has brought immense pride to both his home state and the nation. For his conspicuous gallantry and unwavering commitment to duty amidst grave danger, he has rightfully been awarded the Shaurya Chakra, celebrating a remarkable act of courage and selfless service to India.
