In a remarkable tale of resilience and ambition, Punjab Police Constable Gursimran Singh has successfully transitioned from beat duty to potentially soaring through the skies as a pilot in the Flying Branch of the Indian Air Force (IAF). At just 23 years old, Gursimran secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 52 in the latest Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) merit list, earning him a coveted spot at the Air Force Academy for pilot training.
Currently stationed in Mohali, Gursimran’s journey to becoming an IAF pilot is notable not only for his achievement but also for the determination he displayed throughout the process. His success marks the culmination of years of hard work and dedication aimed at fulfilling his dream of serving his country in uniform.
This accomplishment is especially significant, as it marks Gursimran’s fourth attempt at the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, which is notoriously competitive. Despite encountering setbacks in his previous three attempts, he maintained unwavering focus on his goal, continuing his preparations while balancing his responsibilities as a Punjab Police constable.
Hailing from the Ropar district of Punjab, Gursimran joined the Punjab Police in August 2022. During his police service, he also completed a Bachelor of Arts degree through the Centre for Distance and Online Education at Panjab University, reflecting his commitment both to his career and education.
Gursimran’s training has been guided by retired Major General Yash Mor, who expressed immense pride in his mentee’s accomplishments. Maj Gen Mor emphasized the importance of authenticity in Gursimran’s journey, encouraging him to embrace his identity as a constable while aspiring to an officer’s role in the military. This mentoring relationship has been significant in bolstering Gursimran’s resolve, and the retired officer described his transition as a tremendous milestone that could serve as an inspiration for many young aspirants.
The achievement has not gone unnoticed within the Punjab Police force. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav publicly congratulated Gursimran, expressing pride in the constable’s selection while highlighting the department’s commitment to encouraging its personnel to pursue greater opportunities. He expressed his confidence that Gursimran will excel as a commissioned officer in the Indian Air Force.
Gursimran’s success continues a notable trend within the Punjab Police, where other young constables are also pursuing higher roles within the armed forces. Earlier achievements include constables Anmol Sharma and Lovepreet Singh, who became commissioned officers in the Indian Army in March 2024 after clearing the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination.
