Airbus and Quantum Systems Collaborate to Enhance Military Helicopters with Counter-Drone Technology

Airbus Helicopters has entered into a strategic partnership with Quantum Systems to enhance military helicopter capabilities by integrating cutting-edge counter-drone technology. The collaboration marks a significant milestone in expanding operational capabilities, with the initiative initially focusing on the versatile H145M multi-role helicopter.

Though specific details about the counter-drone capabilities were not disclosed, the partnership showcases a forward-thinking approach to addressing uncrewed aerial threats. A mock-up of an unmanned version of the H145M, displayed at the ILA Berlin 2026, highlighted the potential advantages of this collaboration. The U145 variant features two interceptor drones mounted on its weapon stations, providing a glimpse into future enhancements aimed at securing the skies.

The U145 is designed with a maximum takeoff weight of 3,800 kilograms (8,378 pounds) and boasts an operational range of approximately 650 kilometers (404 miles). Additionally, the helicopter can remain airborne for up to 3 hours and 34 minutes. Its modular architecture allows it to undertake a variety of missions including disaster response, firefighting, reconnaissance, surveillance, and air-launched drone operations.

In conjunction with this initiative, Airbus is also working alongside MBDA to introduce crewed-uncrewed teaming capabilities. Stefan Thomé, Airbus Helicopters Executive Vice President of Programs, remarked on the importance of this agreement, noting it significantly enhances the operational spectrum of military helicopters. “By combining our broad military helicopter portfolio with innovative C-UAS solutions, we are protecting personnel and assets while strengthening European technological sovereignty and defense capabilities,” he stated.

In related developments, Quantum Systems recently introduced its optionally manned PULSE P19 aircraft, which features integrated counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capabilities. Similar to the H145M concept, the PULSE P19 is equipped with drone interceptors mounted on external hardpoints, poised to tackle current aerial threats effectively.

The PULSE P19 is designed for a wide array of missions but emphasizes its C-UAS capability in today’s evolving threat landscape. The German company highlighted that one of the aircraft’s primary features is its ability to detect, track, and neutralize asymmetric airborne threats in low-altitude airspace. Utilizing onboard radar and high-power electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems, the aircraft can actively and passively monitor fast-moving, long-range strike drones.

The entire intercept workflow—ranging from detection to engagement—can be managed either by an onboard pilot or through remotely controlled operations using the MOSAIC UXS system. This integration showcases both companies’ commitment to advancing drone technology and enhancing defense capabilities in an increasingly complex aerial ecosystem.
