The US Air Force (USAF) has awarded a significant contract worth $50 million to AEVEX Aerospace, a California-based defense technology firm, to enhance uncrewed mission support capabilities. This contract marks a critical step in advancing military operations, emphasizing the integration of advanced technologies into modern defense strategies.
An initial funding of $27 million has been allocated to kick-start the production of a modular and expeditionary platform that aims to execute long-range precision strikes, particularly in contested environments where GPS signals may be unavailable. The development of this system is expected to address the increasingly complex challenges faced by military personnel on the battlefield.
The envisioned platform is designed with a high payload capacity, allowing it to accommodate various equipment and mission needs. It will enable seamless integration of payloads, enhancing versatility for diverse operational requirements. Additionally, the platform will incorporate rapid reconfiguration capabilities, facilitating quick adjustments to adapt to evolving mission scenarios.
Work related to the development of this advanced system will be conducted across AEVEX’s multiple facilities throughout the United States, ensuring localized engagement in the technological advancements. This initiative reflects the USAF’s commitment to bolster its operational readiness by leveraging innovative solutions from trusted partners in the defense industry.
Roger Wells, CEO of AEVEX, remarked on the implications of this award, highlighting the firm’s dedication to delivering affordable and rapidly deployable capabilities. He emphasized that the contract underscores the confidence the military has in AEVEX’s ability to enhance mission readiness.
Founded in Solana Beach, California, AEVEX specializes in airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance solutions, alongside advanced autonomous uncrewed systems. The company has gained recognition for its Atlas Precision Strike System, which was selected by the US Army in October 2025 for incorporation into its initial Launched Effects–Short Range (LE-SR) fielding.
In line with its growing portfolio, AEVEX also secured additional contracts with the USAF in May 2026, which included supplying a tactical one-way attack drone and offering support services for autonomous aircraft missions as well as airborne system integration efforts. These contracts place AEVEX at the forefront of developing next-generation uncrewed systems tailored for modern military operations.
