A recent study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has revealed staggering figures concerning the military casualties resulting from Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, indicating that the total combined military casualties have surpassed two million. This figure highlights the severe toll the conflict has taken on both Russian and Ukrainian forces since the onset of hostilities in February 2022.
The report estimates that Russian forces have suffered between 400,000 and 450,000 fatalities, making up a significant portion of the total military casualties, which include those killed, wounded, and missing—totaling approximately 1.4 million. In contrast, Ukrainian forces have endured casualties ranging from 525,000 to 625,000, with the fatalities among them estimated to be between 125,000 and 150,000.
The data provided by CSIS underscores a stark disparity in the casualty figures between the two nations. It points out that the number of Russian fatalities in Ukraine is over four times greater than the total US military fatalities across all conflicts since World War II. Furthermore, the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian casualties has reportedly shifted to about 8 to 1 during the first half of this year, illuminating the intense and dire consequences of the ongoing conflict.
