Taiwan Plans to Build 1,600 Unmanned Attack Surface Vessels with New Defense Budget

Taiwan’s coast guard has reported the deployment of two vessels to monitor Chinese ships off its eastern coast, amid escalating tensions in the region. This move comes as China asserts that it is conducting “law enforcement patrols” in waters it claims jurisdiction over, which Taiwan vehemently disputes.

The backdrop to this situation includes China’s longstanding claim that Taiwan is part of its territory, further intensifying the friction between the two sides. Recent weeks have seen a surge in activity from Chinese coast guard and other government vessels, prompting concern in Taiwan.

Chinese state media has previously justified these operations, citing ongoing discussions between Japan and the Philippines aimed at establishing a boundary in the surrounding waters. Beijing has labeled these talks as “illegal,” claiming exclusive rights over the maritime region, a assertion that Taiwan flatly dismisses.

Taiwan has characterized China’s operations as “provocative” and indicative of “expansionism in disguise.” In a statement, Taiwan’s coast guard underscored its sovereign rights, declaring that China holds no legitimate claim over the waters encircling the island.

A spokesperson from the China Coast Guard (CCG), Jiang Lue, announced that a task force group led by the CCG’s Xiushan ship formation had taken over from another unit to persist with maritime law enforcement patrols near Taiwan. Taiwanese authorities reported that they were closely monitoring these movements, particularly focusing on the two Chinese vessels, including the Xiushan, which were situated approximately 54 nautical miles off their coastline.

“Taiwan possesses sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the Exclusive Economic Zone east of Taiwan, whereas China has absolutely no sovereign rights over any waters surrounding Taiwan,” Taiwan’s coast guard emphasized in a statement. They added that China’s attempts at maritime navigation harassment would not alter this undeniable reality.

The situation is further complicated by China’s increasing military pressure on Taiwan. In recent years, the Chinese military has conducted multiple large-scale exercises, raising concerns among international analysts. While the threat of a direct invasion or blockade remains significant, experts caution that China may also employ law enforcement strategies to exert control over commercial shipping routes around the island, posing an additional challenge to Taiwan’s sovereignty and security.
