Abhida Barretto, a 23-year-old from Muthal-Sadolxem in Canacona, Goa, has made headlines for her remarkable achievements in both academia and military service. She has graduated with an MBBS degree from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, and has been commissioned as a Lieutenant and Medical Officer in the Indian Army. Barretto’s journey from being Goa’s NEET topper to joining the armed forces has not only brought pride to her hometown but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for students across the country.
Barretto’s path to a career in military service is particularly noteworthy as she hails from a non-military background. Determined to realize this dream, Barretto committed herself to rigorous preparation for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Her hard work paid off when she topped the NEET examination in Goa in 2021, a feat that garnered significant recognition in her community. The Canacona Municipal Council even honoured her with a felicitation ceremony, celebrating her remarkable academic performance that brought laurels to the region.
Despite having multiple opportunities to enroll at some of the country’s leading medical institutions, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Barretto chose AFMC, viewing it as a perfect marriage of her medical ambitions and commitment to military service.
During her tenure at AFMC, Barretto distinguished herself academically, earning prestigious accolades and awards. She graduated as the second-best female student in her batch, receiving the Maj Gen N D P Karani Trophy in 2025. Her academic prowess spanned several medical disciplines, as she secured gold medals in Anatomy, Physiology, Pediatrics, and Pharmacology—demonstrating not only her scholarly aptitude but also a dedication to the rigorous standards upheld by AFMC, which combines medical education with military training.
Having completed her MBBS program and received her commission, Barretto is now poised to embark on the next stage of her career. She will begin her internship in Jammu, where she will continue to blend her medical training with the responsibilities that come with her military role.
