Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division has announced a collaborative initiative with France’s Safran Helicopter Engines to explore partnerships aimed at enhancing current and future vertical lift platforms. This strategic alliance is designed to accelerate design timelines, reduce turnaround times, and optimize the distribution of advanced aerospace solutions to both military and commercial clients on a global scale.
The collaboration will focus on new ventures related to power and propulsion technologies, which will support Sikorsky’s existing and next-generation rotary-wing aircraft, as well as unmanned aerial systems. The new partnership builds on a historical relationship spanning over four decades, during which Safran has provided more than 1,230 engines for Sikorsky’s S-76 medium utility helicopter line. This longstanding partnership has resulted in almost 10 million flight hours for these helicopters.
Cédric Goubet, president of Safran Helicopter Engines, emphasized the value of their shared history, suggesting that there are still significant advancements to come from their ongoing collaboration. He noted that as a leading provider in helicopter propulsion and a pioneer in hybrid-electric technology, Safran’s offerings would offer a substantial competitive edge for Sikorsky’s future helicopter designs.
Rich Benton, vice president and general manager at Sikorsky, reiterated the importance of collaborating with European suppliers, highlighting the benefits of building more reliable and optimized platforms. He stated that collaboration from the outset enables faster decision-making and assures customers that the final aircraft will meet stringent performance, safety, and schedule criteria.
This partnership between Sikorsky and Safran reflects a forward-looking approach to aerospace innovation, positioning both companies to better meet the evolving demands of the industry.
