ST Engineering has officially unveiled the Republic of Singapore Navy’s second Victory-class Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), designated RSS Valour (89), at its Benoi Shipyard. This vessel marks a significant advancement in modern naval capabilities under a six-ship initiative launched in 2023, aimed at replacing the Navy’s aging missile corvettes from the 1990s, with operations expected to commence in 2028.
The RSS Valour is designed to operate as a versatile mothership for a variety of unmanned systems, including aerial, surface, and underwater drones. Additionally, it will function as a command center capable of confronting diverse threats within maritime environments. This innovative design incorporates advanced technology that enables enhanced interoperability with smaller vessels, positioning it as a more agile and responsive platform compared to the older warships of similar dimensions.
As part of the vessel’s introduction into service, RSS Valour will undergo significant further development including hull outfitting, combat systems integration, and acceptance trials. These processes will run concurrently with the training of the first crew assigned to the MRCV.
During the launch ceremony, Singapore’s Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam, emphasized the strategic importance of the new MRCV fleet to the nation’s maritime security and sovereignty. He underscored the necessity of maintaining secure and open maritime approaches, deeming it crucial for the nation’s survival. “The MRCV strengthens our Navy’s ability to help us fulfill this mission,” Shanmugam stated.
He also remarked on the evolving nature of the security environment, noting that while not every challenge can be anticipated, the adaptability of new platforms like the MRCV is essential for responding to an array of scenarios.
The Victory-class MRCV measures 150 meters (492 feet) in length and features a beam of 21 meters (69 feet), capable of accommodating a crew of up to 100 sailors. It includes a helicopter deck and hangar, supplemented with advanced sensing suites for enhanced navigation and situational awareness. The armament of the MRCV is designed to provide comprehensive maritime defense, incorporating anti-ship, anti-air, and anti-submarine missiles, along with auxiliary firepower from a Rafael Typhoon 30mm remote-controlled weapon system and an Oto Melara Strales 76mm automatic guided naval gun.
This vessel features an integrated full-electric propulsion system, allowing it to achieve speeds exceeding 20 knots (37 kilometers or 23 miles per hour) and a range of 7,000 nautical miles (12,964 kilometers or 8,055 miles). The deployment of the RSS Valour represents a significant step towards enhancing Singapore’s naval capabilities in an increasingly complex security landscape.
